Undergraduate Foreign Language Education

Obligations for course taking and entitlement for graduation

ARTICLE 7 - (1) In order to be eligible to graduate from the undergraduate program in which they are enrolled, students who are accepted to the French language preparatory class and have successfully completed all courses of this class, must successfully complete a total of 8 credits by taking courses given by the Department of Foreign Languages during their education period.

(2) In order to be eligible to graduate from the undergraduate program in which they are enrolled, students who have taken the French exemption exam and passed this exemption exam must successfully complete a total of 12 credits by taking courses given by the Department of Foreign Languages during their education period.

(3) In order to be eligible to graduate from the undergraduate program in which they are enrolled, students who fail this examination must successfully complete a total of 8 credits by taking courses given by the Department of Foreign Languages during their education period.

(4) Students certifying that they have French bachelors are required to successfully complete a total of 12 credits by taking courses given by the Department of Foreign Languages during their education period in order to be eligible for graduation from the undergraduate program they are enrolled in.

(5) In order to gain the right to graduate from an undergraduate program, undergraduate transfer students from another higher education institution must complete a total of 12 credits by taking courses given by the Department of Foreign Languages during their education period if the related program is registered in the third semester, and a total of 8 credits if they have registered in the fifth semester.

(6) For the students attending a student exchange program in or outside Turkey with the board decision of the faculty they are enrolled in, the amount of credits required for the successful completion of the courses given by the Department of Foreign Languages is calculated by subtracting 2 credits per semester they study outside the university.

(7) Within the scope of this regulation, a student enrolled in one of the undergraduate programs shall not be entitled to graduate from the undergraduate program unless he / she conforms CEF B2 level at least.

(8) A student who is enrolled in more than one undergraduate program within a double major program of the university is regarded as successful in the foreign language courses required by the second major if he / she has successfully completed them in their first major.

Foreign Language Education System

Students who have successfully completed the Preparatory Class and / or fail the French Placement Exam are required to take French B2 courses in the first year of their undergraduate studies.
Students who have enlisted to French B2 level courses at least once, even if they have been unsuccessful in these courses, need to take the English Placement Examination and are required to take the courses offered by the Department of Foreign Languages in the second year of their undergraduate studies.
Students who fail in the English Placement Exam will be placed in classes appropriate to their level.
Students who conform English B2 level need to take either Advanced English, German or Spanish courses in order to complete the required credits.
It is accepted that the graduates of English or German medium high schools conform B2 level.
Each course is opened for a semester and equivalent to 2 credits. In order to graduate, the student must be successful in a total of 12 credits of language courses during his / her undergraduate education, and he / she needs to conform English B2.
The total amount of foreign language course credits required to be completed by the students who take part in the Erasmus program is calculated by subtracting 2 credits for each semester they study outside the University.

The Foreign Language Department is only responsible for the lessons given in the table above. Apart from these courses, the department in which the student is enrolled in is responsible for all other foreign language courses, including French.
In order for the students to be enrolled in the lectures, there is no requirement that they meet the grade and success conditions for the undergraduate program they are enrolled in.
To be able to take any spring semester course at any language level, it is necessary to have taken that fall semester course. However, students who fail the course in the fall semester and continue to study in the spring semester can take the spring course.
The student cannot be enrolled in an upper level course without succession in both of the fall and spring semester courses of any language level.
Attention: Students who fail at least one of the courses opened in the fall and spring semesters of any language level must enter the Level Proficiency Examination. The first Level Proficiency Exam is carried out immediately after the spring semester makeup examinations. Students who fail this exam will take the Second Level Proficiency Exam at the beginning of the next academic year.
The grade (s) of a candidate successful in the Level Proficiency Exam will replace the grade(s) of the courses they have failed. Students who fail both the first and second Level Proficiency Exams need to take the courses again in the next semester. It is required to attend the retaken courses.
If a student who is required to take the proficiency test makes a written application to the Department at any time prior to the fall semester registration week, with a valid result document from one of the international exams (eg TOEFL, IELTS, TestDF, DELE), he / she will be considered as successful in the Level Proficiency Examination.
Students need to attend at least 80% of the courses. Students who fail to comply with the attendance requirements fail the course.
Based on a justified grievance accepted by the Department of Foreign Languages, an excuse examination can be made for students who cannot take the midterms on the specified dates. The reason must be notified in writing to the Department of Foreign Languages within 3 (three) business days following the midterm examination.

Course Evaluation

A student who receives one of the grades AA, BA, BB, CB and CC is considered to be successful. If the student's success grade for a course is F, the student is considered to fail the course.
There is no make-up exams for finals and resit exams.
There is no grade increase exams for the courses opened by the Foreign Language Department.
Within three working days of the announcement of the final exam results, the students may apply to the Department of Foreign Languages with a petition and request that the exam paper to be re-examined in terms of material error.
Students may reject to their grades for a course with a petition to the Department of Foreign Languages within three business days of the announcement of their grades.
