Objective | This course aims to introduce studentsto the growing research area of international migration and the politics of human mobility. To this end, the course will first present contemporary trends in international migration and refugee movements. The course will then provide an overview of theoretical approaches to human mobility and explore the factors underlying migration and refugee movements. As part of the course, we will also examine international refugee law and the emerging global governance of migration and refugees, borders, border control and the securitisation of migration, with a particular focus on Türkiye’s migration and asylum policies and its migration cooperation with the European Union. |
Content | This course is part of the Jean Monnet Chair in Migration Governance for Sustainability and Resilience (MIGOSUR) and is supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. It offers an in-depth examination of the dynamics of international migration and refugee movements, highlighting current trends and key theoretical frameworks. The course explores the drivers behind human mobility, international refugee law, and the global governance of migration, with a particular focus on Türkiye’s migration policies and its cooperation with the European Union. |
Course Learning Outcomes |
After taking the course, students will be able to: 1. Assess global trends in international migration. 2. Compare theoretical approaches that explain the migration process. 3. Evaluate the international refugee protection regime, the right to asylum, and protection responsibilities. 4. Analyse the migration and asylum policies of the European Union. 5. Assess Turkey’s migration and asylum policies. 6. Examine the Migration-Development Nexus and the Migration-Climate Change Nexus. |
