Objective This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the European Union’s migration and asylum policies. It explores the evolution of these policies, focusing on their external dimensions. The course also seeks to familiarise students with the integration policies implemented by EU member states, critically assessing their successes and challenges. Another key goal is to examine the rise of far-right and populist political movements across Europe, alongside increasing xenophobia and anti-refugee sentiments. The course analyses how these trends shape political debates, influence EU migration and asylum policies, and challenge European norms and values of solidarity and human rights.
Content This course is part of the Jean Monnet Chair of Migration Governance for Sustainability and Resilience (MIGOSUR) and is supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. It examines the complex landscape of the European Union's migration and asylum policies, with a particular emphasis on their external dimensions. The course also explores the EU’s efforts to establish legal migration channels and address labour market needs, particularly in sectors requiring skilled workers. Through case studies and discussions, students will analyse the intricate relationships between migration, sustainable development, and societal resilience.
Course Learning Outcomes A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:

1. Critically analyse the European Union's migration and asylum policies, their evolution, legal frameworks, and key challenges.
2. Evaluate the economic, normative, and political constraints that shape EU migration and asylum policies.
3. Assess the impact of EU migration and asylum policies on destination, origin and transit countries,
4. Analyse the effects of integration policies adopted by EU member states, identifying key successes and challenges
5. Evaluate the rise of far-right and populist political movements in Europe, their influence on migration debates, and their impact on EU policies.
6. Assess the EU’s efforts to establish legal migration channels and address labour market needs, particularly in the context of green jobs and sustainable development.
