Introduction

Programme Profile

The aim of the Sociology Master’s Degree Program is to provide an education that deals with the social issues through the field studies based on the data analysis, and appropriated theoretical approaches. Thus, to support the studies which aim at applying the scientific research techniques and contributing to their development as well as to promote the researches which can bring about original theoretical approaches constitutes the major principal of this program.

The students who have successfully completed this program are awarded the Master's Degree in Sociology.

This is a Second Cycle program.


Access Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree (First Cycle) (except the Faculties of medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and engineering); ALES (Academic Personel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Examination) score of minimum 65 or GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Quantitative Section score of minimum 660 (152 points according to the new scoring system) or GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) score of minimum 483; Galatasaray University French Language Proficiency Examination score of minimum 70 or ÜDS (Interuniversity Board Foreign Language Proficiency Examination) score of minimum 70 in French or KPDS (Public Service Foreign Language Proficiency Examination) score of minimum 70 in French. Those who have B2 level in DELF and C1 level in DALF certificates and the graduates of Galatasaray University are regarded as providing the conditions of French foreign language requirement. The cumulative grade point average of the candidate should be minimum 2.50 out of 4.00. A research proposal (between 5 and 10 pages, in French) and two letters of recommendation are also required.


Programme Requirements and Regulations

The Master’s Degree in Political Science is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the compulsory courses in the curriculum and the required number of elective courses (60 ECTS) with a cumulative grade point average of minimum 2.75 out of 4.00, a graduate seminar and a master’s thesis (60 ECTS).

6 The student will be able to develop her/his capacity of reflecting on the ethical problems of sociological research and of finding solutions to overcome them.
7 The student will be able to identify the relation between the research objectives and the research design in order to propose and conduct a research proposal.
8 The student will be able to evaluate the research data and to report the research results as well as will acquire the capacity of drawing theoretical and macro conclusions from these results.

Occupation Profiles of Graduates

Students who graduate from the Program can apply for the doctoral programs to pursue an academic career. Besides, they have the opportunity to work in the public institutions (ministries, TUIK, ISMEM, etc.), in the non-governmental and international organizations as well as in the private sector (research institutions, media, advertising, public relations, institutional communication, marketing, etc.).


Access to Further Studies

The students graduated from this programme may apply to doctorate (Third Cycle) programs.

For each course taken, the student is given one of the following letter grades by the instructor:

A student who has received a letter grade of “AA”, “BA” or “BB” in any course is considered successful. Students who have received a grade of “CB” or “CC” are also considered successful provided that their cumulative grade point average is at least “2.75”. The letter grade “F” indicates “Fail”. The grade “BL” is given to a student who successfully completes the Master’s Thesis, whereas “BS” denotes a failing grade for Master’s Thesis.

 

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): The total credit points for a course are obtained by multiplying the grade points by the ECTS credits. In order to calculate CGPA the sum of total credit points earned in all the courses taken by a student is divided by the sum of all ECTS credits.
