Programme Profile

The main purpose of the PhD program in philosophy is to train research scholars and specialists in various areas of philosophy.


Qualification Awarded

The students who complete this program successfully are awarded the PhD Degree in Philosophy.


Level of Qualification

This is a Third Cycle program.


Access Requirements

The candidate has to have an MA degree. The candidate’s Bachelor’s Degree (First Cycle) or MA (Second Cycle) degree has to be obtained in philosophy. Also the candidate has to succeed in the oral and written entrance exams for PhD which are organised by the philosophy departement. ALES (Academic Personel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Examination) score of minimum 65 (equally weighted score) or GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Quantitative Section score of minimum 660 (152 points according to the new scoring system); Galatasaray University French Language Proficiency Examination score of minimum 70 or ÜDS (Interuniversity Board Foreign Language Proficiency Examination) score of minimum 70 in French or KPDS (Public Service Foreign Language Proficiency Examination) score of minimum 70 in French.


Programme Requirements and Regulations

The students who have successfully completed the required compulsory and elective courses (60 ECTS) with a cumulative grade point average of minimum 3.00out of 4.00. After being completed the required courses successfully, the student has to pass the qualifying exam (60 ECTS) and write a PhD thesis (60 ECTS) to obtain The PhD Philosophy.

The students who successfully complete the PhD program in philosophy may apply to posts in philosophy departements of the universities.

For each course taken, the student is given one of the following letter grades by the instructor:

A student who has received a letter grade of “AA”, “BA” or “BB” in any course is considered successful. Students who have received a grade of “CB” or “CC” are also considered successful provided that their cumulative grade point average is at least “3.00”. The letter grade “F” indicates “Fail”. The grade “BL” is given to a student who sucessfully completes the PhD Thesis, whereas “BS” denotes a failing grade for PhD Thesis. The letter grade “IA” indicates a failing grade caused by the inattendency of the student and the letter grade “NP” indicates the failing grade caused by the non-presence of the student in the final exam.

 

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): The total credit points for a course are obtained by multiplying the grade points by the ECTS credits. In order to calculate CGPA the sum of total credit points earned in all the courses taken by a student is divided by the sum of all ECTS credits.
