| Objective | This course covers a period of three centuries, from 1648 to 1945, namely, from the Westphalian Treaties to the end of the Second World War, focusing on the state formation and construction processes, starting with Europe as the center where the modern sovereign state was conceived. The main purpose of the course is to comprehend and to make understood the basis and structure of world history through the analysis of continuities and ruptures. Therefore, the course is committed to develop a perception of history that could be called History of the World through the study of various trajectories and realities of each country / state and region as a whole while establishing the causal relationships.. |
| Content | As mentioned above, this course covers a period of three centuries between 1648 and 1945, from the Westphalian Treaties to the end of the Second World War. The study of this process, which goes from Westphalian peace, considered as the genesis of the modern sovereign state, concentrates on the one hand on inter-state relations and those between states and their respective societies, on the other hand. It also implies a study of the evolution of the principles that manage these relations. In this context, the course pursues a dual axis involving a warlike process in which states are formed and destroyed, and borders are formed, and a legal process in which these principles are formed / conceived. The content is composed of wars and treaties that have transformed and reconstructed the world, respectively, as well as the movements that have transformed societies. |
| Course Learning Outcomes |
The students: -Acquire knowledge of state formation and construction processes; - Understand the historical bases of the contemporary world; - Learn the principles that constitute the essence of the concept of modern sovereignty; - Learn the structure of the world history formed through ruptures and continuities; - Acquire the ability to establish links with other courses, and thus learn to learn, to have a comprehensive knowledge, adequate; - Acquire the ability to discover the permeability between various concepts and disciplines, and this, by treating materials (not only books and articles, but also a multiplicity of materials containing also video games) through a certain problematisation; acquire the faculty of transmitting their acquired knowledge between various disciplines and courses; - Learn the social and political dynamics at the bottom of the actors' strategies. |
| Teaching and Learning Methods | The method consists of, apart from the narrative and the readings, deploying a multiplicity of materials ranging from videos, documentaries, to video games, which seem to be impertinent, but which are, on the contrary, based on a thorough knowledge of history. and geography. |
