Objective | The study of international relations lies at the crossroads of two disciplines: history and political science. This master’s course aims to explore how the perspectives of the historian and the international relations scholar shed different light on international phenomena. |
Content |
In the first part, we will analyze historiographical approaches to international relations: diplomatic history, Marxist and economic approaches, cultural and ideological dimensions, postcolonial perspectives, transnational and global history. The goal is to understand how historians construct their narratives, what sources they use (diplomatic archives, testimonies, statistics, cultural narratives), and how multiple temporalities – events, long-term structures, collective memories – shape our understanding of the past. In the second part, we will examine the history of international relations through the major theories of the discipline: realism, liberalism, constructivism, critical theories, feminist and poststructuralist approaches. The aim will be to show how these conceptual frameworks allow us to reinterpret certain historical episodes (world wars, the Cold War, decolonization, globalization) and to question the relevance of theories in analyzing the evolution of the international system. |
Course Learning Outcomes |
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: - Identify the main historiographical approaches to the history of international relations. - Evaluate different types of sources used in historical analysis (diplomatic archives, testimonies, statistics, cultural narratives). - Apply international relations theories (realism, liberalism, constructivism, critical, feminist, poststructuralist approaches) to historical cases. - Critically discuss the relationship between historical processes and theoretical frameworks. - Interpret globalization, decolonization, and the evolution of the international system from an interdisciplinary perspective. |
Teaching and Learning Methods |
- Lectures and guided discussions - Required and supplementary readings - Case studies (specific historical events) - Group work and classroom presentations - Written assignments and short essays. |
