Objective | The purpose of this course is to discuss on the principal theories and the fields of research in interpersonal communication; to detail some notions concerning interpersonal communication such as listening, self-expressing, self-esteem, perception, verbal and oral communication, the power, ethics… etc; to discuss the lived communication problems based on the way of self-expressing and of discussing how the personal, religious, cultural, psychological, linguistic and professional differences influence this interpersonal communication process with an interdisciplinary approach. |

Course Learning Outcomes |
At the end of this course, the student will be able; ? To comment on the definition and the contents of the interpersonal communication. ? To know the various important social institutions for interpersonal communication like the environment, the family, the neighbors, the school, the friends, colleagues… etc ? To notice that the individual is organized and he/she is in relation to time and the place during the communication process. To know the variety tools of interpersonal communication. ? To define the fundamental theories of the interpersonal communication such as social penetration, social decision, cognitive coherence, cognitive dissonance, reduction of uncertainty, to establish a relation, the opening of oneself, the attachment and the conservation. To observe this process of communication with concrete examples. ? To define the conflict management, the personal causes of the conflict and the types of avoidance and to discuss them with concrete examples. ? To notice the difference between listening and effective listening; to define the types of “not listening” with examples. ? To notice the difference between “empty” silence and silence “full”. ? To comment on the difference between the use of the language of “me” and “you” in oral communication and the impact of this on conflict management in interpersonal communication. ? To define non-verbal communication; to evaluate the importance of the gestures, the body language, the glances, the tone of voice, the touch, the personal behaviour, the space in interpersonal communication process with concrete examples. |
Teaching and Learning Methods | To learn the basic theories of communication by analyzing examples of the different communication areas and making comparisons between them. |
