Objective In the theories of modernization, urbanization has been considered a key component of social change, and the city has become the central place and object of analysis. This course aims to analyze the various forms of urbanization by highlighting urban transformation in the neoliberal era.
Content The first part of the course will be devoted to debates on urban fragmentation, highlighting the theoretical perspectives of urban sociology. Then we will discuss the transition from the industrial city to the city of services. We will continue with the main topics such as mobility, marginality, exclusion, segregation, as well as gentrification and the new social stratification linked to the current globalization. After examining some emerging contradictions within the current cities, we will analyze the tension between fixity and movement generating the incessant formation of social and spatial fields.
Course Learning Outcomes Students will be able to elaborate a sociological questioning based on observations of urban life, to conduct research including a certain empirical dimension, and to present their research in oral and written forms.
Teaching and Learning Methods Direct and interactive teaching; presentations; Use of audio-visual materials; Sociological visits.
