Objective This course takes a practice-based approach to examining the audiovisual documentary expressions of art in a variety of media formats.
Content Focusing on interactions amongst documentary film, photography, sound studies and performance art, students will be encouraged to experiment with unique approaches to audiovisual media with their existing skill sets.The course also involves careful and intensive reading and analysis in the contemporary state of documentary modes of representation. A substantial amount of class preparation time should be devoted to listening to recordings and watching documentary videos.
Course Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this class students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of aesthetic history of documentary representation.
2. Debate ethical issues inherent in creative non-fiction forms of art.
3. Appreciate the impact of emerging forms of multimedia on documentary forms of artistic expression.
4. Evaluate and engage with scholarly arguments.
