Objective The learning goal of this course is to ensure that students understand the history of the unification of Europe,the process of enlargement and deepening,EU institutions and their competences ,the dynamics of the decision-making procedures as well as the practical aspects of the work of the EU institutions, the scope and source of EU law as well as distribution of power, the discussions on future of Europe and a brief summary of Turkey’s acession process.
Content The different phases of EU unification,EU institutions and their jurisdiction,the sui generis nature of EU law and decision making mechanism,the political and technical aspects of accession, enlargement,deepening and knowledge of EU Treaties,the prevailing political and economic landscape in the EU and the ongoing discussions on the future of Europe,brief summary of Turkey’s accession process.
Course Learning Outcomes At the end of the course, the students have acquired a good understanding of common norms and values which the EU is built upon, the functioning, purpose and objectives of the EU as a political and economic space, the legal foundations of the EU institutions and the decision making procedures as well as the relationship between the member states and EU, the source of the difficulties the EU is confronting today and various scenarios as regards the future of Europe.
Teaching and Learning Methods 3 hour courses as well as QA sessions.
