Objective This course aims to provide an introduction to the contemporary mechanisms of international dispute settlement and an overall understanding of their functioning. In that regard, the course includes an introduction to the main mechanisms and permanent bodies of dispute settlement, with a specific focus on issues of jurisdiction, admissibility and evidence .

Course Learning Outcomes Students taking the course are expected to have acquired the following main outcomes/skills by the end of the semester:

• To have knowledge of the mechanisms for resolving existing disputes under international law and to understand how the main mechanisms work;
• To master the similarities and differences between various dispute resolution mechanisms;
• Develop an opinion on the successes and failures of these mechanisms;
• Understand the dispute resolution mechanisms applied in certain important disputes;
• Learn the rules governing the functioning of major international courts/arbitration tribunals.
