The first half of the course provides an overview of socio-economic and institutional developments during the 19th and 20th centuries. The second half of the course focuses on specific topics, with presentations based on research articles. * Presentation topics: Population, demographic dynamics Inequalities Standard of living and well-being Prices and economic integration Fiscal policy and public debt Sources of growth Reforms, modernization and economic impact Infrastructure Economic crises Institutional legacy Trade Training and state capacity Agriculture - reforms, performance, policies Industrialization Education |
Course Learning Outcomes | Master the main debates and research areas, the elements of continuity and rupture. Become familiar with the various data sources and quantitative works on the socio-economic and institutional history of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey (19th-20th centuries). Put into perspective and compare the articles presented and discussed. |
