| Objective |
Aim of the course is to investigate the formation of the “modern state” in context of European experiences and its spread to other regions, especially in Ottoman Empire and Republic of Turkey. Besides, the basic concepts of political sociology will be understood and they will be used to comprehend the socio-political structure of Turkey. |
| Content |
Within the scope of the course, the differences and similarities between the political science and political sociology will be discussed at the first stage During the next sessions, formation process of the “modern state” and its components will be handled. The articles that analyze the modern state in context of Ottoman Empire will be read and discussed in a critical way. At the remaining big part of the course, center-periphery approach will be discussed and its contributions and deficiencies will be investigated. Attached to these subjects, social and political structure of Turkey will be tried to understand considering the political actors, values and institutions like Kemalist ideology, military and businessmen. |

Comprehending the formation process of the “Modern State”. Comprehending the components of the state. Thinking over the idea of nation and its appearances in Turkey. Thinking over the “center-periphery” relations in Turkey and handling the subject in a critical way. Relating the matters of political actors, institutions and values. Evaluating the effects of Kemalist ideology, military and capitalist class on the socio-political structure of Turkey. |
