| Objective |
This course focuses on the analysis of the diffusion of the democratic model in a globalized world. From the theoretical lectures and practical examples, it examine the complex dynamics that have made this political system diffuses out of the western region where it was born. It invites to consider all internal and external factors that made ??possible the importation of democracy outside the West. It highlights the great diversity of democratic regimes and disclaims any evolutionary universalist vision. |
| Content | In the first part of the course, we will see that the analysis of political systems has long been dominated by the reference to Western political dynamics understood as universal. We will focus in the second part to the spread of democratic norm allowing regime changes without questioning the nature of political systems. Finally, in the third part, we will focus on revolts and political changes taking place in the Arab world in order to grasp the logic, paradoxes and limitations of these revolts. |
| Course Learning Outcomes |
Students who have successfully completed this course is able to: 1) explain the concepts related to democracy, 2) understand the complex logic of political change 3) analyze and categorize the various theories of democracy and authoritarianism 4) to examine the normative and prescriptive models of democracy 5) develop a capacity to analyze political transformations in contemporary societies 6) establish the various factors necessary to take into account the foundations of political systems 7) reflect on the political dynamics of non-Western societies and their relations with the West |
| Teaching and Learning Methods |
The course is based on a lecture. It is based on the weekly readings relating to the course and give rise to exchanges and discussions. These two elements involve regular attendance of students and reading the texts. Students will conduct a study from the proposed texts. |
