Content

Objective

To learn various sujbects on French civilization, from the Middle Ages to nowadays : history, literature, architecture, painting, music, society problems.

Course Content

Middle Ages : the building of a civilization, the epopee, courtly love
16th century : the Renaissance, the humanism, the religious wars
History of the french langage : from the latin to the classic french
17th : from the barocco movement to classicism
18th : the philosophers of the Lumières, the birth of the French Republic
19th : Napoléon, the "mal du siècle" and the birth of romanticism (literature, paintings), the Industrial revolution and realism (literature, paintings, cinema)
20th : the influence of world wars upon literature (absurd, surealism) and the political and litterary francophony

Course Learning Outcomes

- to analyse texts
- to analyse paintings, buildings (churches, palaces, gardens... which represent a part of each century's achievement)
- to analyse documents such as manuscripts

Teaching and Learning Methods

Magistral course, based upon texts and documents (photos, videos, paintings) and comparison of documents.
Tests are provided after each century : questions of knowledges and reflexion.
