| Objective | Main purpose of the course is to introduce students to the specific perspective of historical sociology concerning the construction of modern state in Europe within a comparative perspective in Ottoman Empire. The transformation of the state into a nation state, the development and spread of nationalism and citizenship constitute the second major component of the course. |
| Content | In the introduction we will discuss three classical works such as three sociological logics which conceptualize differently the state question: Marx, Durkheim and Weber. After acquisition of the classical theories of the State we will study the emergence of the modern state under a historical and sociological light. In the process of statization; from absolutist state to Nation state we will analyze the link between politics and society to better understand the diversity and specificity of the modern state. The last part of the course will be devoted to the phenomena of nation and nationalism in relationship with citizenship and to roles played by State in national construction and development. |
| Course Learning Outcomes |
1- Know the conception of the state of the classics such as Marx, Weber and Durkheim. 2- Interpret the State in Turkey with conceptual means of studied thinkers. 3- Learn the history of the emergence of the modern state. (Comparison between western Europe and the Ottoman Empire) 4- Know the continuity and rupture of feudal politic organization in absolutist state. 5- Understand the ambiguous relationship between state, nation and nationalism, the construction of modern citizenship in Europe and Turkey. |
| Teaching and Learning Methods | The course is generally in form of lectures. Only at the end of each major section we will organize in class a session of brainstorming to make a preliminary assessment on the acquisition of knowledge. Students will be encouraged by instructor to participate actively in class. |
