Objective This course aims to analyse the evolution of Ottoman criminal law from the early centuries till the end of the empire. The evolution of a criminal act and the concept of punishing in different centuries will be discussed in the course.
Content Ottoman criminal law in theory and practice in the early modern and modern age
Course Learning Outcomes At the end of this course the student can
-Criticize the description of crime in Ottoman Empire before the age of modernization.
- Analyse the relation between legal thinking and morality in early modern age.
-Evaluate the impact of modernization in the definition of crime.
-Analyse the process of the reception of “western law” in Turkey in the context of criminal law
