Objective The aim of course is discussing important elements of the political and social fields such as youth and women's movements, environmentalist and sexual-religious-ethnic minority actions and also cultural identity-based social movements, urban and anti-globalization movements in the context of the new social movement’s theory.
Content This course aims to discuss the post industrial phenomenon that is since 1968, elements which are perceived outside of the class relations has become the source of identity and occupied the central axis of the social conflict. Initially, in this context, identity movements based on space, generation and gender will be discussed with regards to New Social Movements Theory. In the second stage, anti-globazation
movements will be discussed with their several examples, actors and concordantly, their relations with social media. In the third and final stage, examples from Turkey will be discussed with regards to the theories of social movements and evaluated comparatively with the other samples from different societies. In all these processes, connection of cultural identities and class identity will be of central importance.
Course Learning Outcomes Students who are following the course will be equipped with these abilities:
1) By leaving institutional political sphere out, analyzing the socio-political transformation of post 1968 period in an identity-based theoretical context.
2) By using necessary theoretical and conceptual tools, analyzing the elements encoded “culturally”, such as gender, generation and ethnicity from the perspective of class antagonism
3) Analyzing the social effects of globalization.
Teaching and Learning Methods The course will consist of lectures and weekly discussions on texts which will be held every week. These two elements make the attendance mandatory. Students will be informed about the texts which will be read and discussed texts before the classes.
