Objective | The aim of the course is to study on popular culture through music, which is not only an essential cultural expression but also a primary subject in the context of the debates on culture. |
Content |
The course takes popular culture, which we define as the culture composed of masses of people in a society and represents their forms of expression, as object of study. For these groups, the culture means an occasion of incorporating and affirming their experiences. In addition, its significance is provided from being a form of challenge and appropriation of dominant culture. It is simultaneously composed of its dependence and reaction to the dominant culture of past and future. The course will begin with the theories about popular culture and music. After this introduction, the course will be continued by analyzing the various musical traditions in 20th century throughout the world. Secondly, the course will examine also the various currents of popular culture in Turkey. |
Course Learning Outcomes |
The students who have followed and successfully completed the course are able to: 1) Explain the basic concepts of sociology of culture 2) Understand the popular culture as a study object and compare the different approaches by the study of this fact. 3) Understand the relationship that maintain the various music currents with social system and also with their local, national, and international environment 4) Analyze the official discourse (s) on popular culture 5) Compare the various examples of popular culture of the contemporary world. 6) Analyze the impact of globalization and new technologies on the structure of culture. |
Teaching and Learning Methods |
The course will be mostly based on magisterial presentations and discussions about weekly readings. These two elements require regular attendance of students and also reading of the texts. The information about the texts to be read will be given every week in class. The students will be asked to provide their contributions to the course every week by preparing and realizing a presentation of a research about compulsory readings. |
