| Objective | The aim of course is, focusing on the case of Turkey, discussing important elements of the political and social fields such as youth and women's movements, environmentalist and sexual-religious-ethnic minority actions and also cultural identity-based social movements, urban and anti-globalist movements in the context of the new social movement’s theory. |
| Content |
This course aims to discuss the post 1980 phenomenon in Turkey that is elements such as gender, ethnicity, social generations which are perceived outside of the class relations has become source of identity and occupied the central axis of the social conflict. In this regard, social movements will be handled initially in the context of the city-space. In the first sessions of the class while discussing the theories of urban identity and movements, urban movements and their transformation resulting from the process of social transformation that occurs in the last half-century will be investigated in the axis of urban integration and tension. In the later weeks of the course, the social movements theory, especially the debate about the nature of new social movements will be highlighted and discussed. In the context of the theories of social movements, women's movements , youth movements , cultural identity-based movements, anti-globalization movement and civil disobedience will be discussed with the sample cases in Turkey. |
| Course Learning Outcomes |
Students who are following the course will be equipped with these abilities: 1) By leaving institutional political sphere out, analyzing the socio-political transformation of post 1980 period of Turkey in an identity-based theoretical context. 2) By using necessary theoretical and conceptual tools, analyzing the elements encoded “culturally” in Turkey, such as gender, generation and ethnicity from the perspective of class antagonism 3) Analyzing the social effects of globalization in Turkey |
| Teaching and Learning Methods | The course will consist of lectures and weekly discussions on texts which will be held every week. These two elements make the attendance mandatory. Students will be informed about the texts which will be read and discussed texts before the classes. |
