Objective Being able to select the information technologies (IT) that fit the company structure and manage the information systems related to these technologies are crucial for our students to provide company’s decision-makers the right information at the right time. The knowledge that our students acquire during this optional course will assist them to recognize and adapt to up-to-date IT systems during both their summer internship and future professional life. Within this context, the objectives of this course are:
• to show students how actual IT affect and transform the business life and commerce
• to familiarize students with the actual data processing, transfer, storage and security technologies
• to allow students in assessing which information systems are required for a company to build relationships with its suppliers and customers and also to manage its production and distribution processes.
• to create an awareness among students on the problems they may encounter during the selection, transition planning and implementation of an information system and to inform them how they can solve those problems.
Content Information systems in the global business world; Globalized electronic business: how companies use information systems; Information systems, organizations and strategies; Information technology infrastructure and new technologies; Foundation of business intelligence: databases and information management; Telecommunication, internet and wireless communication technologies; Security of information systems; Enterprise applications; Electronic commerce: digital markets and products; Knowledge management
Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student should acquire the following knowledge and skills:
1. Define how information technologies may change the business and their relations with the globalization
2. Explain the characteristics of different management information systems and their effects on business processes
3. Relate information systems with the company’s organizational structure and competitions strategies
4. Inform on the historical development of IT infrastructure’s components and their actual application examples
5. Formulate the importance of database management principles, data management, data quality and information policies
6. Describe the actual wired and wireless data transfer technologies and the technologies that the internet is based on
7. Explain the actual security problems related to information systems and some protection measures to avoid them
8. Evaluate the support of enterprise resource planning, supply chain management and customer relationship management systems to reach operational excellence and satisfy the customer
9. Recognize how e-commerce and m-commerce change the business world
