Objective The objective of the course is to inform students of urban identity and movements in Turkey in the light of current examples. In this context by focusing on the concepts of urban transformation, urban segregation, spatial identity and right of city, various texts will be discussed relating to actual examples.
Content In the light of several examples, the course will begin with the presentation of several theories on urban identity and urban movements. Especially, it will be focused on the transformation of the cities in Turkey in recent decades with regards to urban integration and conflict.
In addition, the topics of urban tension and spatial segregation will be discussed as social facts and also as representations in the mass media and popular culture.
Course Learning Outcomes Students who are following the course will be equipped with these abilities:
1) Explaining the basic concepts of urban sociology
2) Comprehending the effects of urbanization and social change in contemporary Turkey.
3) Analyzing the causes and effects of urban problems.
4) Comprehending the relationship between social change and urban transformation.
Teaching and Learning Methods The course involves weekly lectures and discussions of the weekly given texts. These two constituents oblige students to attend the course and read the texts. The information concerning the texts that will be read and discussed in each week will be given in previous classes.
Students will be expected to contribute to the class by preparing and presenting a research project.

1 Use major concepts, theories and approaches with an effective comprehenshion of the relationship among them.

10 Use French, the main language of education in Galatasaray University, in accordance with the requirements of intercultural communication following publications in French and communicating with colleagues in the international environment.
