This module tries to familiarize the students with general seamanship terminology and theoretical and practical aspects of English grammar used in Maritime English

Content |
The course focuses on the development of: - vocabulary/terminology skills in Maritime English:ship handling, machine parts, -daily conversation in the engine room and accommodation areas -reading the manual of the various machines

Course Learning Outcomes |
a.The student is to acquire the necessary skills to pronounce and discriminate between the English sounds, to comprehend and produce written and oral elements as components of the study units. The students should also acquire the listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. b.The students should develop and improve the oral and written comprehension and production skills; they should extend their vocabulary; they should acquireand use the grammatical rules for speaking in certain contexts according to the study units contained in the curriculum which is mainly maritime related c.The specialty vocabulary should be acquired and developed by memorizing the technical maritime terms referring to the ship types, parts of the ships,equipment and installation on board, and also the terms and phrases used in international maritime communication. d.The students should develop and improve their competences in using English

Teaching and Learning Methods |
Class time is primarily devoted to lectures. We will use material from the texts to illustrate some of the basic points and develop listening and correct pronunciation, and to encourage speaking. Methods of teaching – learning are: lectures, heuristic conversation,explanation, discussion, case study, problem-solving, simulation of situations, methods of group work, pair work, individual and frontal methods for developing the skills.
