Objective In the process of modernization and secularization, the Republican elites who cared to detach from the old regime have tried formatting the State by a worldly equipment giving up the power of the religion to legitimize and to sanctify the politics. In the new political order, the tendencies to sanctify the regime and its founding leaders have created interesting formations related to the « non-religious religiosity » of the political figures. The seminars will focus on the intersection, disintegration and integration moments of what is earthly and the sanctity. In this course aiming to analyze the observed religious and worldly operations of sanctifying in the social political areas; with reference to theoretical analysis level of state anthropology and to conceptual framework developed by political sociology, the political and social facts and the actors related to those concerning the politization of the religion and sanctifying of the politics which are sometimes mingled in Turkey will be dealt as object of review.
Content In this course, initially a theoretical and historical introduction referring to history, sociology, anthropology and political science fields related to main subject of the course history will be provided. Thereafter the official ceremonies like ceremony of accession to the throne, gird on ceremonies, selamlık of Friday, and the protocol order and the symbols implemented in those ceremonies will be dealt. Finally, in the process of establishment of modern nation-State in Turkey, in the framework of the tendency of the young Republic to detach its ties with the Ottoman past the old/new antagonisms which find expression around the political will be analyzed. The importance and the role of the official rituals and symbols in nation building process and in the determination of where lay the limit will be examined within the framework national holidays and days of commemoration, monumental sculptures, anthems, poems, plays and maps
Course Learning Outcomes 1-Analysis of religion in the classical literature of sociology. Marx, Weber, Durkheim and Tocqueville.
2- Dealing with the sanctity, power and rituals in the literature of state anthropology and politics
3- Sanctifying dimension of the power in historical process
4- Relations between the political sovereignty and political symbols
5- Relations between nationalism and religion in the process of political modernization
6-Dimension of religiosity of nationalism
7-Religious and non-religious practices of religiosity under the Ottoman rule
8-Analysis of the political symbols and ceremonies in the process of building the nation State in Turkey
Teaching and Learning Methods The course takes place in the classroom with students face to face. From time to time, for the Ottoman and Republican periods engraving miniatures, pictures and movies, the records of the Ottoman march will be used. PhD candidates will contribute to the course with the presentations they will do, subjects of which will be related to the problematics dealt within the framework of the subjects treated in class during the last three weeks. Every student should send to the lecturer and to his classmates a draft text, a bibliography and articles about his presentation at least one week before the presentation.
