Objective SP411: Special Topics in Political Science - I
Theme of the course: Spaces and Places

During the course, you will:
• Improve your critical reading skills, so you can think and write more clearly and incisively
• Develop your writing process through phases of generating ideas, drafting, peer evaluation and individual writing consultations
• Become more familiar with features of various academic texts
• Learn to incorporate the work of other authors into your own writing within the requirements of Turkish academic practice
Content This course is a theme-based academic writing course for political/social science students. It is is designed for students who wish to produce advanced research and writing in the political/social sciences. The course is also appropriate for students who wish to review their research and writing skills before graduate study elsewhere. Students are introduced to the various social science disciplines and their approaches, while also learning how to become critical consumers of social science research. Students develop their own independent research project in the political/social science field of their choosing. This project lasts the entire semester and involves developing a viable research question; learning how to find, analyze, and interpret resources appropriately; and, finally, developing and refining an original argument in a final paper.
The topical focus of this course will be the interdisciplinary study of spaces and places. We examine sites such as monuments, museums, neighborhood squares, shopping malls, stadiums, and tourist attractions, virtual spaces. We ask questions about these locations and their social, cultural, and historical significance.
Course Learning Outcomes By the end of this course, you should be able to:
• Identify the purposes, typical components and features of various academic genres
• Structure an academic paper at the macro and micro level
• Think and write more clearly, using appropriate style
• Employ effective skills and approaches when writing papers
• Properly incorporate the work of other authors into your own writing, and understand the GSU policy on plagiarism
• Edit and refine your own written work
Teaching and Learning Methods The course content is mainly built around content-based instruction. Students are expected to read about universally acknowledged topics such as political space, memory, urban phenomena and to exploit relevant authentic academic articles to complete assignment sheets. During class, feedback is given on these assignments through class discussions, debates, group work. Also, the socio-political and historical references of the texts are discussed in class. With regard to non-fictional texts, articles, commentaries and editorials, students are expected to analyze the texts and synthesize relevant information from these sources in some of their written work before or after class discussions.
