Objective In this course, the modernity as a stage dominated by risks rised by the development of the industrial society and the role of the media in risk perception will be discussed initially by Ulrich Beck's theory of 'Risk Society'.

'Risk Society' will be discussed in the lights of social theorists' concepts of 'risk', 'hazard' and reflexivity. Social, economic and political mechanisms behind the spread of 'fear culture' will be investigated with the analyse of the media and communication environments.

Course Learning Outcomes At the end of this course student will be able to;

-Acknowledge key concepts of 'Risk Society', 'reflexivity', 'governmentality' and 'biopower' on risk context.
- Raise questions and discuss on issues evolving around 'risk' concept of the post-modernity
- Analyse the effect of globalisation on 'World Risk Society' and the role of the media on risk perception.
