Objective
This course takes the theories of sociology that we have tried to group especially through the themes of culture and identity, as its object of study. Through the various theories in sociology, the aim of the course is to provide theoretical bases considered to be useful for analyzing social phenomena of the contemporary world.
Course Content
We tried to group these theories through themes of culture and identity.
Through the theme of culture, we will try to discuss the theories of Norbert Elias, of the Frankfurt School, School of Cultural Studies and through facts of civilization, mass culture, popular culture.
The notion of identity will be discussed mainly through works of Pierre Bourdieu, Alain Touraine, Michel Foucault and Anthony Giddens.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students who have followed and successfully completed this course are able to:
1) Explain the concepts related to sociology.
2) Understand the major theories of sociology
3) Analyze the social phenomena through the contemporary theories of sociology.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The course will be mostly based on magisterial presentations and discussions about the weekly readings. These two elements require a regular attendance of students and also a reading of texts. The information about the texts to be read will be given every week in class.
The students will be asked to provide their contributions to the course every week by preparing and realizing a presentation of a research about compulsory readings.
