Objective

1. To determine the ship’s position on the ocean,
2. To use concept of the Celestial Coordinates, Time and Apparent Motions of Celestial Body, the Celestial Sphere, composition and dimension of the Solar System for understanding and determining the ship’s position.

Course Content

Introduction to celestial navigation, definition of the space, celestial sphere, composition and dimensions of the Solar System, explanation of the eccentricity of the earth’s orbit and the apparent annual motion of the Sun, the meaning of the Dec-SHA-RA-GHA-LHA, definition of the apparent solar time and mean solar time, time, equation of time, date line, explanation of astronomical triangle on the celestial sphere, finding and drawing of the astronomical fix and position, using of NP 401, HO 229 and Almanac.

Course Learning Outcomes

I. Understanding Solar System, Celestial Coordinate System and Eccentricity of the Earth’s Orbit; how to obtain and determine Aries and Autumnal, Celestial Horizon System and Coordinate Hour Circle, Hour Angle and Meridian Angle such as; GHA-LHA-SHA-RA-Dec.
II. The differences among Apparent Solar Time, Mean Solar Time, Equation of time, Local Mean Time, Greenwich Mean Time and Zone Time and calculation of astronomical twilight,
III. Knowledge and usage of Nautical Almanac; calculation of Zenith distance, height of calculated of the Body and Sun rise and Sunset time,
IV. Usage of NP 401, Sight Reduction tables and determining the Assumed Position and Intercept, and fixing LOP (Line of Position) on the Plotting Sheet,
V. Determining Hc (Height of Calculated) of the Sun and the Moon and Intercepts,
VI. Determining Hc of Stars and identifying unknown celestial bodies
VII. Using NP 401, A-B-C diagrams and Offset Table to fix Celestial Position at stars, as a result of this the navigator could determine the ship’s position on the open sea (ocean) without using any electronic navigation aids, just to use celestial marks for safety of navigation.
