Objective

The course aims to explain how international law governs the various areas of international relations.

Course Content

The course content consists of an analysis of the various areas governed by international law, such as the recognition of states and governments, State succession, the settlement of disputes, the use of armed force, international responsibility, diplomatic and consular law and the international law of the sea.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

1) analyse the development of international law,
2) understand international society through the subjects of law,
3) follow developments on the international scene,
4) anticipate possible developments in international relations,
5) explain the basic concepts of legal relations between subjects of international law,
6) understand the logic of international organisations and how they operate,
7) discern the position of the individual in international society,
8) understand the responsibility of subjects of international law.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Lectures, reading of articles and case law, case analysis.
