Objective This course examines audiovisual methods used in social research with an emphasis on the history and aesthetics of making documentary films and multimedia work.
Content Drawing on the disciplines of visual anthropology, media studies, and documentary film this course aims to provide students with a theoretical and practical background in audiovisual communication. Ethnographic film as a tool for social research and communication, intersections of artistic and ethnographic practices, transcultural cinema, collaborative filmmaking, and sensory ethnography are amongst the topics to be covered in this course.
The course involves careful and intensive reading and analysis in the contemporary state of audiovisual approaches in social research. Also, a substantial amount of class preparation time should be devoted to watching documentary videos and listening to recordings.
Course Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this class students will be able to:
1. Evaluate and engage with scholarly arguments on theoretical, practical, and creative aspects of audiovisual research.
2. Use video for social science research, community-based studies, and applied work.
3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of ethical considerations on video in ethnographic research.
4. Understand how audiovisual documentation has shaped anthropology.
