| Objective | The objective of this course is to reflect on the global historiography and how the histories of regions and countries are situated in this history. Within this framework the focus will initially be on the formation of social sciences and then on subjects that determine our World-conception such as orientalism, Eurocentrism as well as studies in social sciences in postcolonial period. Their impact on the historiography and consequences on political science will be addressed throughout the course. Additionally, the approaches that attempt to explain the Ottoman-Turkish modernization will be examined and alternative exploratory methods will be highlighted. |
| Content | First of all from a broad perspective the emergence of social sciences and its link with power relations will be analyzed taking into account the position of historiography in this process. Secondly the path followed by historiographythroughout the republican period will be analyzed. Relationship between “East” and “West” will be evaluated based on themes such as Eurocentrism, Orientalism, Orientalism of the East, internalized orientalism etc... This section will be followed by the examination of the impact of historiography on the perception of the World through maps and classifications such as oceans and continents. |

Reflecting on the roots of social sciences. Analyzing the global historiography through subjects such as Orientalism, Eurocentrism etc.. Reflecting on different approaches that analyze the modernization process in Ottoman Empire and Republican Turkey |
| Teaching and Learning Methods | Courseswill be composed of anintroductorypresentation of the instructor on the broad framework of the week’s subjectand by the discussions on the weekly readings. Students are expected to prepare a presentation on a subject they choose within the framework of the course and present it in the class. Taking into account the criticisms they will finalize their paper to be submitted at the end of the term. |
