Objective The objective of the course is as well as investigating the religion-state relations within the framework of the disciplines of political science, anthropology and sociology of religion also dealing with the socio-political functions of religion and its positioning in the state and society in the context of Ottomans and Republican Turkey.
Content With reference to sociological and anthropological analysis of religion and referring to the relationship between historical religions and political sphere, religious and secular sacralization operations that are observed in the social and political sphere will be discussed. In this context, occasionally intertwined processes of politicization of religion and sacralization of the political will be investigated with reference to socio-political phenomenons and significant agents related to those phenomenons. Within a socio-historical perspective Islam- political relations, as well as the role and importance of religion in the Ottoman state structure, the arrangements made in the Republic of Turkey, the concepts of secularism and modernization will be examined. Finally, with reference to the topic of Islamism as a political ideology, political parties and community-style structures will be discussed.
Course Learning Outcomes To examine religion within the framework of sociological and anthropological approaches.
To discuss the relationship between politics and religion in different times and places.
Analyzing the political effects of religion and the impacts of politics to the sacred.
Finding out the approach of the Ottoman and Republican state system to the religions.
